Qualities Remote Workers Need For Success

Remote work plays a more significant part in today’s business world than ever before. Yet, while telecommuting has been around for a long time, until relatively recently, working from home was still a rarity. Now that’s all changed. For millions of remote workers, long-term career success now depends upon being successfully able to work well outside of the office.

For many people, succeeding as a remote worker can be complicated. While it’s easy to describe all the benefits (no lengthy commute, the possibility of greater flexibility in choosing where to live), significant hurdles still exist. Staying productive at home can be difficult. Connecting with colleagues while not being in the same physical space is hard. Even the freedom allowed by remote working has its downsides.

That is why specific qualities are essential for success as a remote worker. If a professional in today’s business world still needs to possess these characteristics, they should strive to develop them. Here are the three primary qualities to focus on.

Self-Discipline

All the freedom allowed by remote work has its downside — if a remote worker isn’t careful, that is. This is where self-discipline becomes so critical. At home, without a boss or coworkers around, away from the collaborative, work-oriented environment of the office, it’s shockingly easy to waste hours browsing social media or watching TV shows. Even household chores can be a distraction. The presence of family members or needy pets can also get in the way of focusing on work.

The only real solution is to stay disciplined. Remote work can have a very different feel from working in the office, but guess what — it’s still a job. Remote workers who treat their duties as seriously as if they were in a classic business environment will succeed. Fortunately, self-discipline is as much a matter of habit as anything else. Setting up a home office and choosing and sticking with a good work schedule will soon help self-discipline come naturally.

Time Management Skills

Though rules vary from company to company, remote workers typically have much more latitude in setting their schedules. For example, some remote workers need only be available for meetings during certain hours and are otherwise free to do their work whenever they choose. Some people even take advantage of these opportunities to travel internationally, choosing to work from time zones far different from the home office.

But again, this freedom can be a double-edged sword. Being able to set your schedule can quickly devolve into procrastination or inefficiency. A remote worker may even find their work taking longer than it should, eating away at the time off from the job and destroying work-life balance. Again, developing strong time management skills is the answer. Prioritizing the day’s most important tasks, being goal-oriented, and planning how to take on projects is essential.

A Proactive Attitude

When everyone is in the same office together, it’s relatively easy for managers to track how an employee is doing. A manager is likely to know if an employee is struggling. But when an employee is thousands of miles away, working from home, many of the subtleties of communication that exist when people are in the same physical space are lost. When all communication is over email or Zoom, staying keyed in with colleagues and bosses becomes much more challenging.

That’s why, when working remotely, a professional has a greater responsibility resting on their shoulders. Remote working is only for people who can take the initiative. For example, an employee feeling confused about a project can’t be afraid to contact their boss for help. Being proactive about connecting with colleagues is vital, too. Top performance requires being on the same page as the whole team. A proactive approach is particularly needed when first joining a new company as a remote worker.

At this point, most white-collar professionals will likely be working remotely at some point in their careers. Whether that possibility fills a person with joy or trepidation, the importance of mastering the skills needed to be a great remote worker cannot be ignored. The three qualities described in this article will be essential for future success while working remotely.
